It was given to me at birth. It is my property. It does not belong to anyone else. It does not belong to my mother, my husband, my children, and especially not my government.
I–an independent, free American woman–strongly believe in and supports a woman’s right to choose. This does not mean that I would ever have an abortion, but I’ll be damned if I sit idly by and deny the right to someone else. I do not believe in abortion as a form of birth control; I’m sure that was not the original intent. However, politicians have no right denying me a right granted to me by the Supreme Court (Roe v Wade) under the guise of better health care for women.
Really? Is that truly what these men believe? These Bible-thumping, Republican men that have never cried while reading a pregnancy test and felt their heart drop to the bottom of their chest knowing the implications of the plus sign on that little stick? Men that have never had to walk into a clinic, past a picket line of people calling them murderers, making them feel as though this one mistake somehow defines them as human beings? Female politicos that support this backlash against women may as well be uncaring men themselves.
How dare these politicians–men that we elected–stand behind closed doors and pass laws claiming to protect our rights while quietly dismissing women as second class citizens incapable of making health-related decisions all by themselves.
Let me guess what comes next: requiring my husband’s approval before making any decisions because, as a woman, what could I possibly know?
Once again, thanks for insulting me, women, and our collective intelligence, Mr. Politician.
